There is a vast amount of knowledge about the Pendle witches as the proceedings of the trial were recorded by the clerk of the court and preserved and published. The facts are still available today. A majority of the evidence came from the confessions of only four of the accused: Alizon Device, her brother James Device, their grandmother Demdike, and Chattox.
In 1612, at Lancaster Gaol, ten were hanged for the crime of witchcraft.
